COVID-19 MALL CHECKLIST

"Prepare your tenants, customers and your mall for the new normal."

As many countries begin to relax their COVID-19 restrictions, Mall Consultants is supporting many international mall operators with the re-opening of their shopping centres. Customer Check List

Customer Signage

Customer signage at all entrances listing all control measures and conditions for entry.

App Downloads

Customers to download mall app or government's tracing app to enter. Provide QR download code.


Social Distancing

Give guidance to customers at entrances & internally: between 1m-2m  or one person per 16sqm.

Face Masks

Making facemasks obligatory for entering the mall and its environs.

Thermal Scanning

If available, scan customers thermally prior to entering the mall.

One Way Directional Traffic

Apply road markings and lines to the mall floor to create one-way pedestrian flow.

Reduce Mall Capacity

Consider reducing footfall capacity to 30% throughout the mall and in stores

Implement Queuing

Implement queuing internally for foodcourts, restrooms and tenancies. 

Floor Distance Markers

Adhere floor distance markers at areas in which customers are likely to queue. 

Protect Vulnerable Customers

Some countries are preventing access to the over 60s due to higher vulnerability. Be careful about equality issues.

No Returns or Refunds

Purchases cannot be returned or exchanged at all stores and outlets, unless there is a defect

Reduce use of cash

Encourage use of smart & electronic payments & avoid the use of cash. Disable ATMs.

Increase Your Communication

Use every medium to communicate the new restrictions to your customers.

Limit your Commercialisation

Remove children's rides and turn off vending machines to eliminate touchpoints. 

Mall Check List

Disinfection Period

Close mall overnight and implement through disinfection of public areas. 

Air Conditioning

It remains unclear if HVAC recirculates infected droplets. Consider switching HVAC off. 

Remove Seating

Reduce dwell time and infection risks by removing customer seating.

Restrict Use of Vertical Transport

Only allow elevators to be used by disabled persons. Elevator use restricted to every 4th step.

Reduce Parking Spaces

Limit car park capacity down to 25% to reduce overcrowding in the mall. 

Change Food-court Operation

Tables 2.5m apart & 2 persons max. Sales to be via App & by contactless payment. Takeaways.

Install Sanitisers

Install sanitisers every 20m and make regular tannoy announcements about their use. 

Restroom Restrictions

Impose a 1-in, 1-out policy with closure for sanitisation every 30mins.

Add Mirrors

Install mirrors to assist customers check their own social distancing. 

Remove Touchpoints

Turn off touchscreens and open doors to remove the need to touch handles.

First Aid Staff

Ensure trained first aiders on site during opening hours. Have a room for emergency isolation.

COVID-19 Staff Tests

Ensure staff have regular opportunities to be tested.

Tenant Compliance

Draft a compliance agreement to ensure that all retailers act as one in preventing viral spreading. 

Digital Customer Service Pods

Set up iPad screens at concierge desks to interact live with customers.
